about

yaki.be services

Don't get confused, we do make sites.

At the moment, yaki.be is a one-man business, being Klaas Bellemans behind the keyboard, on the road, at the telephone,... and some sympathic people that like to help around in creating the yaki.be brand.

As I don't do just web-design, I'd like to call it "webengineering, -concepts & art":

If I were JUST a webdesigner I would only focus on the design: the way a page looks.

Everyone can "draw" a site with a website builder program, not everyone knows what they are doing, and why.

The page looks the same, the engine behind it is different...

Custom made

Web(site)engineering

Engineering as in finding the right solution for the problem, applied to the web(site).

Reading, using, analyzing, correcting, fixing, cleaning, upgrading, (de)composing, designing, building, coding... of websites and webapplications.

We are talking about lines of code.

Handmade, handtyped websites full of timeless concepts! Real coder behind the keyboard. No website builders are being used. Only a text-editor with synthax highlighting.

(Web)concepts

Always thinking about something new.

Systems and solutions.

tips

home link

Every page of your site has a link to the "home" page?
Most sites use the company logo for that purpose.

favicon.ico

Use your company logo as a webpage-icon that appears in the addressbar of your browser.

The fav-icon is in fact the icon used (in IE and other browsers) when the site is saved as a "favourite", a bookmark.

Use a gif2ico or png2ico program to transform your 16*16 px logo image into an ico file, and put it in the same folder as your website.

Then add this code to the <head> section of your homepage:

visitors

To get visitors, your link needs to be on pages they surf on. Pages they pass by when searching for what needs to be your site, sites that talk about the topic you talk about. So get yourself listed in directories & search engines, but be selective, the quality of the referring site also influences page ranking in search engines.

BTW, link descriptions (the description used on the 'other sites' to refer to your site) are a very important indicator of the keywords denoting the content of your site: the search engine keywords.

Frequently Asked Questions

I want a website, now what?

Write the book that is your website: a tree-like structure of titles, paragraphs, lists,...

To make a book/site:
  • design a "book cover" (index- and/or home-page)
  • write the "table of contents" (menu, sitemap)
  • grab attention & summarize the content in the "preface" (be condense)
  • write the actual "content in titles, paragraphs, lists" (be complete, clue at the end)
  • add pictures as finishing touch (& interactive features...)

Make sure you give the people what they want and expect: use e.g. menu-item-names that are commonly used 'contact, faq, about, services, prices...'

Decide about a design: in case of upgrading, the best thing is re-aligning your template instead of redesigning it entirely. You also don't change your logo every 5 years, do you?
We'll make sure it looks like the "logical style upgrade".

And of course, contact us, because we can assist you in each of these steps.

^ faq

Why are you better? What is your added value?

Better, better? Better than a graphic designer doing sites. Not the best coder (in the world) but a pretty good site GUI coder.

I type my sites, and don't use website builder software at all. Instead I read references, tutorials, code samples,... and with some trial and error try to create my own code.

I also try to keep up with the "standards", making it possible to view sites in an acceptable manner in any browser and on any media, being a computer, mobile phone, PDA, print...

A lot of sites don't care about people with impaired vision and their special needs when viewing a site. Sites made by YAKI are a pleasure for those people. It's all about structure & keeping it clean.

My speciality is "website template upgrading" or "template copying": cleaning up old html4 code and transforming it to modern & very flexible xhtml1 code. To look the same or better. I also keep scripts and styling options in separated files. Because my sites are pages of content styled according to some template, separating content, styling, interaction,... you have a flexible system to work with. Not only do they look like the correct version of the site you already had, they are "more usable" for you & the visitors AND (could) rank better in search engines.

An invisible force, often underestimated because not "grabbable". My work is invisible or only visible when it appears.

Being a very critical webdesigner, for quite some time now, I look different at sites than you do. Maybe I can help you to get your surfers where you want them to be.

Have you already clicked on the page upgrade button?

Prices?

I use a very loose principle of days, probably not covering all the time spend in perfecting it, valuing myself as a common outsourced IT specialist.

Depending on the job, complete websites can already be fixed in about 5 days, or it can take up to 3 months...

A silent law when it comes to sales: 15% of the profit is for the one that sold it.

The same goes for sites: webdesign companies secretely take 15% of your company's annual revenue as a price estimate of your site, often being a number with at least four zeros, some multitude of times.

15% that must cover the effort needed to give a company of that 'size' a respectable website: creating a new look 'n' feel for your online leaflet, while keeping your company's image intact.

NOT ME: I count days. And yes, the clock is ticking.

Days go by.

You decide how many, and I'll add a little more.

^ faq

That's it?

Aah, this site took about 40 days to develop from scratch during a period of 4 months .

Could it be done faster?

Yes, as everything can be done in "2 days": one day of preparation and one day of action.
(A third day is needed for testing & bug-fixing.)

There are also faster ways to construct websites
than typing every character of code,
with an acceptable result...

I guess it's an art-form.
And I am not the only one working like this.
(Therefore not crazy doing it?)

Could it be done better?

Probably, the internet beholds a lot of underdogs...
and I give up, they may win.

Am I satisfied?

Yes, are you?

That's IT!

Greetz
Klaas

To summarize...

I create custom website Graphical User Interfaces (GUI's):
that means building your template (as close to the design as possible); with respect to maximum usability, structure, minimalism; and add the wanted functionality.
